What are chemical peels?

Chemical peels use controlled solutions (such as glycolic, salicylic, lactic, or TCA blends) to gently dissolve the top layers of dead or damaged skin.
At Sage & Honey, peels are chosen based on your skin type, concerns, and medical history – not pulled off a spa menu. We use peel strength and layering we can control, so we can target issues like dullness, rough texture, and sun damage while prioritizing safety.

What can peels help with?

Depending on the type and depth, chemical peels may help improve:
  • Uneven texture and roughness
  • Mild fine lines
  • Sun damage and age spots
  • Post‑inflammatory marks from acne
  • Overall dullness or “tired”‑looking skin
Deeper wrinkles or severe scarring may be better served by CO₂ laser or RF microneedling; we’ll tell you honestly what’s realistic.

What to expect

Before your peel:We review your medical history, current skincare, medications (like retinoids), and sun exposure. Some peels may require a short period of skin prep to lower your risk of irritation or pigment changes.

During your peel:Your skin is cleansed, then the peel solution is applied in one or more layers. You may feel warmth, tingling, or mild stinging for a few minutes. Neutralizer or cool compresses are used when appropriate, and you leave with post‑peel instructions and products if needed.

After your peel:Expect some degree of tightness, dryness, or flaking, and in stronger peels, visible peeling or sheet‑like shedding over several days. Sun protection is critical. We’ll give you clear guidelines on what to use, what to avoid, and when to come back.

Frequently asked questions

Not every peel is right for every skin tone. On deeper complexions, we are more conservative with peel type, strength, and prep to reduce the risk of unwanted lightening or darkening. We’ll recommend only what’s safe and appropriate for your skin.

Many patients do a series of 3–6 light or medium peels spaced a few weeks apart for best results, then occasional maintenance. Stronger peels are done less frequently. We’ll outline a plan based on your goals and lifestyle.

It depends on the peel. Some cause only mild flaking; others can lead to more visible peeling for several days. We’ll tell you exactly what to expect from the specific peel we choose together so you can plan around work and events.

Peels work well for surface texture, pigment, and mild fine lines. Deep wrinkles or more severe scarring usually respond better to CO₂ laser or RF microneedling. If a peel alone won’t get you where you want to go, we’ll be upfront about it.
